In 11)01 the writer was detailed to make an investigation of thecommercial aspects of the lislierj^, and the following notes give com-plete data showing its condition in the calendar year 1900: GROUNDS, VESSELS, METHODS OF THE FISHERY, ETC. « There are two well-defined areas of the Florida coast in which spong-ing is prosecuted. A chain of keys, or islands, starts from the mainland at aboutMiami, on the east coast, and extends, in the shape of a horn, far intothe Gulf of Mexico, the Dry Tortugas being the westernmost point ofthe horn. In the waters surrounding most of these ke^^s, and alsobetween the keys and the mainland as far as Cape Sable, sponges arefound.
