INTERIOR OF EAST HAM ELECTRIC STATION at the same time the Council procured powers for an electriclighting system. Tramway privileges were extended in 1900, soas to cover a total of 2^ miles of double track and 6% miles ofsingle track, of which 41/2 miles have been completed. The sys-tem is interesting, not only from the fact of its being the firstmunicipal electric line in London, but also because it combinesa lighting and tramway service. The contracts were awarded inSeptember, 1899, and Dick, Kerr & Company were the successfulbidders for the complete installation. The power station is practically in the center of the distributionsystem on a plot of land 5 acres in extent, which is occupied bymunicipal buildings. The tramway buildings include the powerstation, car house, and practically all of the structures required inthe operation of the cars. The engine room measures 177 ft. x42 ft. It has a clear height of 26 ft., and is served by a 20-tontraveling crane. The walls are lined
