Nucleosome core particle bound to DNA. Molecular model showing a nucleosome core particle (green and purple) bound to a strand of DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid, blue and red). A nucleosome is the basic unit of DNA packaging in eukaryotic cells, consisting of a segment of DNA wound in sequence around four histone protein cores. The nucleosome core particle consists of 147 base pairs of DNA (seen here) wrapped in left-handed superhelical turns around a histone octamer consisting of 2 copies each of the core histones H2A, H2B, H3, and H4 (seen here).
