Caption: Kanchendzonga, Sikkim, India - Mar 2003. Rhododendrum buds on the five-day trek to Gochela, base camp for Mount Kanchendzonga, India's highest peak and at 8,585 meters the world's third highest mountain. To the Sikkamese, who are Mahayana Buddhist, the mountain is sacred. Its name derives from the Kangen, and the Sikkamese believe it to be a guardien deity whose benign watchfulness ensures peace and prosperity over the land. Also it is only five days away from the nearest village of Yuksom, but nobody has ever climbed Kanchendzonga from the Sikkamese side -although it has been done from the Nepalese side-, complying with the wishes of the Sikkamese. Mount Kanchendzonga is within a protected nature zone, renowned for its profusion of orchids and rhododendrons in the springtime.
