Close-up of a Southern Pilbara Rock Monitor, Hartley's Crocodile Adventures, Captain Cook Highway, Wangetti, Queensland, Australia.
The Southern Pilbara rock goanna (Varanus hamersleyensis), also known as the Hamersley Range rock monitor, is a dwarf member of the family Varanidae. It was recently separated from the Pilbara rock monitor (V. pilbarensis) on the basis of coloration and genetic studies. The species is restricted to the Hamersley Range of Western Australia. Without a doubt one of the best looking monitors we have in Aus. Named after the Hamersley Range of Western Australia, the region to which it is restricted. It's closely associated with rocky habitats such as banded ironstone rock faces and gorges. It shelters in overhangs, crevices, cavities and is extremely swift and agile; ascending vertical rock faces with ease, and quickly takes shelter in deep crevices when disturbed.
