The Queen from Mechel's "Triumph of Death" 1862

The Queen has just issued from her palace, when Death unexpectedly appears and forcibly drags her away. Her jester, in whose habiliments Death has ludicrously attired himself, endeavors in vain to protect his mistress. A female attendant is violently screaming. Death holds up an hour-glass to indicate the arrival of his fateful hour. Handcoloured engraving from Chretien Mechel's "La Triomphe de la Mort" (The Triumph of Death) published in 1860 in Stuttgart. It is believed that Mechel's engravings were not after Holbein, but after sketches by a young Peter Paul Rubens (1577~1640).
