Crop of maize in a field at Hinton, Golden Valley, Herefordshire. The field is on the west bank of the River Dore.

The fields around Hinton are increasingly being used to grow maize to supply a nearby anaerobic digester. Maize is a natural choice as it has both a high yield per hectare and a high yield of biogas per tonne. Critics, however, point to the fact that it causes a degraded soil structure and greater surface water run-off. The foreground shows a drift of Rosebay Willowherb (Chamerion angustifolium) at the capsule and seed stage on the bank of the River Dore. In the background is Hinton Hall.
