The King Power Stadium, home of Leicester City FC, from the River Soar/Grand Union Canal, in Leicester, Leicestershire, England
Leicester City Football Club was originally founded in 1884 as Leicester Fosse. It joined the Football Association in 1890 and the Football League in 1894. After the league was suspended in 1915 because of the Great War the club got into financial difficulties; when the programme recommenced in 1919 the team played under the name of Leicester City, as they have done ever since (when the club again got into financial difficulties in 2002 a return to the original name was considered, but met with little support). It first played in the top flight of English football in the 1908-09 season; the club was immediately relegated and did not return to the top division until 1925, but have regularly played in the top flight since then. In other seasons they have almost always played in the division immediately below; not until 2008 did they drop out of the top two divisions for the first time, a situation that only lasted one season. Leicester City have won the League Cup on three occasions (1964, 1997 & 2000) and been runners up twice more (1965, 1999); they have never won the FA Cup but have been finalists four times (1949, 1961, 1963, 1969) and also won the Charity Shield in 1971 (replacing Arsenal, who had other commitments). Their highest league position came in the 1928-9 season, when they finished second. The Walkers Stadium replaced Leicester City's nearby Filbert Street ground, where they had played since 1891. It was designed by the Miller Partnership with a seating capacity of 32,500, although that could be expanded in the future if needed. Construction took only one year (June 2001 - July 2002); in the meanwhile, however, Leicester City were relegated from the Premiership, and the cost of the stadium was a factor in the club entering administration that October. In the re-arrangement of the club's finances, they lost ownership of the new stadium, although they continued to occupy it on a long lease. It was re-branded the King Power Stadium in July 2011.
