James Whistler (1834-1903) was an American Painter and etcher. His lawsuit against Ruskin was an example of his efforts to publicize his art. He was influenced by Velasquez and Japanese print artists. Among his best known paintings are Old Battersea Bridge, Portrait of My Mother, The Artist's Studio, and Portrait of Thomas Carlyle. This painting, titled Nocturne St. Mark's Venice, was first exhibited in 1886 at the Royal Society of British Artists. A newspaper said at the time that the only noteworthy fact about the painting was the price - 650 pounds which was "just about 20 shillings to the square inch."
