The Heysham to M6 Link will complete the long awaited connection from the Heysham and Morecambe peninsula to Junction 34 of the M6. It will be a two lane dual carriageway with a footpath and cycleway along the entire route. The first phase was completed in July 1994. The new road begins at the junction of the A683/A589; Morecambe Road roundabout by Lancaster and Morecambe College. This roundabout will become a signalised crossroads. The road then travels north-east passing over Torrisholme Road, West Coast railway line and the Lancaster Canal. Just before the road reaches the A6 there will be a new roundabout, linking the new road with the A6. The new road will pass under the A6 and the existing A6 will be raised to accommodate this. Between the A6 and Shefferlands Roundabout (which is to the north of Halton Road and just west of the M6 motorway), the link road will pass under Green and Kellet lanes. Shefferlands roundabout is the starting point for the new realigned northbound on slip road. This roundabout will also provide a link to Halton Road and a link over the River Lune to Caton Road and the other newly aligned motorway slip roads and the park and ride facility. The new road will provide improved access for residents, businesses and tourists to the Heysham and Morecambe area. It will open up areas for regeneration and reduce congestion currently experienced within the City of Lancaster.
