This parish is very pro-ductive of grain, which in some years is shipped toa considerable extent: a haven is formed by the mouthof the river Allan, at Porth Clais, about one mile fromthe city, where a pier was constructed, at a very earlyperiod, to defend it from the violence of the waves, andwas rebuilt in 1722. Of late years the quay has beenextended, and the harbour otherwise considerably im-proved. To this small port, which is a creek to thatof Milford, belong seven vessels, averaging abouttwenty-five tons burden, which are principally employedduring winter in conveying grain (chiefly barley) andbutter to Bristol and other ports on the Severn, andduring summer in bringing limestone, coal, and culmfrom the shores of Milford Haven. In the year 1830,. three thousand quarters of grain and two hundred andfifty casks of butter were shipped from this place. Themarket, which was formerly held on Monday andThursday, has long been discontinued : fairs are heldon March 12th and August 5th. St. Davids has nomunicipal corporation, although there is an officercalled mayor, whose duty consists only in collecting thechief-rents belonging to the bishop, within the limitsof the city, which is co-extensive with one of the fou
