The following year the vines must be installed as represented inFigure 81; every vine has a little cot (a) of two buds, and a fruitbranch {b, c) of ten buds. The fruit branch is attached horizontallyto an iron wire (5), stretched at about one foot above the ground;another wire (^), about sixteen inches above the first one, serves as asupport for the shoots and canes. The iron wires are supported bythe stakes d, d, d, from four to five feet high, placed at the foot ofevery vine, and by smaller ones (c, e) put between the vines. Thelatter are not indispensable, but they make the framework firmer, and permit using No. 12 wire for B, whereas otherwise it would benecessary to use No. 15, the same as must be used for A. The ironwires are fastened to the large stakes by means of tacks or staples;the little stakes (e, e) are simply fastened to the wires with osierswhen tying up the 50 PRACTICAL MANUAL OF When the shoots begin to develop, all those put forth on the oldwood must be removed, and also those on the fruit branch that wouldnot bear grapes. As the shoots of the fruit branch attain sufficientlength to reach the wire A, they must be fastened to it; they must allbe pinched at the second leaf above the top bunch of grapes, or alittle higher up if necessary, in order that they may be long enoughto reach the wire. The two or three shoots which will develop onthe cuts a, a, a, must be carefully fastened to the stakes d, d, d, withoutbeing pinched; they may be topped above the stakes, towards the endof vegetation, when the development of lateral shoots on these canesis no longer feared. The long fruit branch requires to be trained horizontally, in orderthat the sap may be distributed without dilliculty to every shoot. Itfrequently happens that a
