On 26 January 1778 Willem Carel Dierkens and Willem Hendrik van Nieuwerkerke left The Hague for a trip to southern Italy, Sicily and Malta. They were later joined by Nicolaas ten Hove, Nathaniel Thornbury and the Swiss artist Louis Ducros. Ducros recorded the sights along the way, which Ten Hove edited into three albums at home after the trip
