Bjorn Wiik (1937-1999), Norwegian physicist and director of DESY, the German particle physics laboratory in Hamburg, from 1993 to 1999. After studies in Norway and Germany, Wiik specialised in particle physics. He spent two years at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC) in California. He came to DESY in 1972 and was one of the physicists working at the PETRA accelerator who found the first experimental proof of the gluon particle. In 1980 Wiik conceived the idea of HERA, the Hadron-Electron Ring Accelerator, and became responsible for its construction. It started operations in 1992.
