Unless one had been through suchexperiences, no one could understand what it is to travel by native boatup a Chinese canal, to arrive in a distant Chinese city, and to be carried,a stranger, for the first time, through its crowded, narrow, windingstreets. It is not so much the facts, but the. feelings. Oh, the wonders of the narrow, tortuous, busy streets through which we passed ! Endless and indescribable, they wind and twist about, revealing marvels at every turn to the unaccustomed eye. Their narrowness surprised one as much as anything. You expect all the time to come to something wider; but no : all, all the same—four, five, six feet wide, but no more. At last we stopped at a smallish door in a blank wall, adjoining quite a nice friendly-looking, little chapel front, which we easily guessed to be the fcsiis
