Inflamed and flaking skin on the hand of a 3 year old boy with eczema. Eczema is a superficial skin inflammation (dermatitis) characterised by an itchy rash and small blisters that may weep and become crusted. Scaling, thickening and discolouration of the skin may also occur. Excessive scratching can lead to infection. Eczema can occur for a variety of reasons and sometimes has no apparent cause, and children may grow out of it. Treatment includes avoiding any known cause and the use of soothing ointments and corticosteroids.
