In that re-public the family of this remarkable man hadlong held an important position. Niccolo wasborn in 1469. At the age of twenty-nine heentered the public service as chancellor of thegovernment. Afterwards, he was secretaryof the Florentine republic for fourteen holding that important office he wascharged with the public correspondence of thestate. He became a diplomatist, and indeedmay be considered the father of the diplomacyof Modern Europe. In the course of his lifehe was employed on twenty-three foreign em-bassies, four of which were to the court ofFrance. From his state papers, which were. After the Florentine revolution of 1512,Machiavelli fell into disfavor and was perse-cuted. By one decree he was deprived of hisoffices, and by another banished from thecity. In the following year he was accusedof particijiation in a conspiracy against theCardinal de Medici—afterwards Leo X.—andwas tortured with a view to obtaining a con-fession. At a later period he regained insome measure the favor of the reigningHouse, and was again employed in importantpublic services.
