Male spider. Close-up of a male spider (order Araneae) with pedipalps extended (bottom left and right) containing sperm packets (liquid droplets, bottom). A spider's pedipalps are a pair of appendages near the front of the body, under the head, which are similar to mandibles in insects. Mature male spiders transfer sperm from their genitals onto the pedipalp tips. Here the sperm is stored until a mate is found, whereupon they are released into the female's genital opening.
