Boy with cigarettes peering over a wall. Many children try smoking due to curiosity and a desire to experiment, but most children who continue to smoke do so because their friends also smoke. This pressure to act like your friends is called peer pressure. Some people become addicted to the drug nicotine that is contained in tobacco cigarettes. Cigarettes also contain cancer-causing chemicals. Tobacco smoking is a major cause of lung cancer and chronic bronchitis.
