The parish is a peninsulaabout six miles long, and two or three broad,bounded nearly the sea. The church standsabove the harbour, within an old quadrangularfortification, with a bastion at each corner, builtabout 450. On a mountain near it is anotherold fortification called Turris Munimentum,which is a stone wall without mortar; and in itscen-tre is a small turret, that contains a was formerly visited by Irish rovers,and was defended as a place of are several druidical remains in its neigh-bourhood. The church was built in the reignof Edward IIT. and rs in the form of a cross,. HOL 325 ROM with a very antique porcli and steeple. The oldchapel near it is now converted into a school-house. A salt-house was erected on an islandin the harbour in queen Annes reign, but it isnow in ruins. It is said that one of the Welshprinces founded a college here about the year 580;but some suppose that it was not founded tillthe beginning of the twelfth century. The headof this college was called Pendas, and was oneof the three spiritual lords of Anglesea. At thedissolution of the monasteries it became theproperty of the Gwynnes, till in 1648, it wassettled by Thomas Gwynne, esq. on Jesus College,Oxford, for the maintenance of two fellows andas many scholars. It has good inns, but no freshwater, except from the clouds, nor any breadbut
