Blue sky portrait, to Left bank Apartments, People's Museum and former hydraulic pumping station, Left Bank Street, Manchester

Since 1997, the Spinningfields area of Manchester City Centre, between Deansgate and the River Irwell has been developed as a business, retail and residential development by Allied London. Towards the Irwell, the Left Bank Apartments were completed in the summer of 2007. This development (background shot) includes 391 luxury apartments above riverside restaurants. On the right stands the People's Museum, which includes exhibits on the history of social justice for ordinary working people in the UK. Since 1994 part of the museum has been housed in a 1909 former, hydraulic pumping station, whose Baroque architecture red bricks stand centre mid-distance. Between 1894 and 1972, when the system was turned off, due to corrosion concerns, Manchester had three power stations, this being one, in which steam pumps were used to pump water, at pressures up to 77 bar or 1,120 pounds per square inch, through high pressure mains in the streets to power machinery such as lifts, cranes and a large number of cotton baling machines. Manchester's Civil Justice Centre, dating to 2007, rises on the left side of the shot.
