Yeast cell. Coloured scanning electron micro- graph (SEM) of a budding yeast cell, Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Known as baker's or brewer's yeast, this fungus consists of single vegetative cells. One of the cells is the \mother\" cell from which a \"daughter\" cell is budding off. As the budding process is nearly complete the cells are about the same size so it is not possible to identify the mother cell. Saccharomyces cerevisiae is able to ferment sugar, producing alcohol and carbon dioxide in the process. It has long been used in the brewing of beer, production of wine, and in baking leavened bread (causing the dough to rise). Magnification: x6,863 at 7x6cm size. Magnification: x13,725 at \" size."
