Markoereceived his early education at Lyons CollegiateInstitute in New York City and Holbrooks Military Academy at Sing Sing, New York, and was gradu-ated at Princeton in 1876, taking the degree of Doc-tor of Medicine three years later at the College ofPhysicians and Surgeons of Columbia as one of thehonor men of his Class. For about a year after hisgraduation he continued his studies abroad, attend-ing several of the celebrated surgical clinics of Ger-many and France. Engaging soon after his returnto New York in the general practice of his profes-sion, he gained a reputation for ability and skill inthe department of surgery, which has won for hima recognized position among the foremost surgeons. FRANCIS H. of the younger generation in New York. Duringthe year 1880, Dr. Markoe was connected with theresident surgical staff of the New York 1881 to 1887 he was Attending Physician tothe Nursery and Childs Hospital. Since 1S87 hehas been Attending Surgeon to Bellevue Hospital;since 1889 Attending Surgeon to St. Lukes Hos-pital, and since 1895 Consulting Surgeon to theNew York Orthopedic Hospital. He was electedin 1899 Attending Surgeon to the New York Hos-pital. Dr. Markoe has been identified with theteaching staff of the College of Physicians and Sur-geons continuously since 18S0; during the firstfour years in the capacity of Assistant Demonstratorand from 1884 to 1887 as Demonstrator of Anat- UNIVERSITIES JND THEIR SONS 403 omy, and since 18S7 has been Clinical Lectureron Surger
