It was exceedingly offensive and humiliat-ing to the people, and was very bad judgmenton the part of the authorities—if it was their de-sire to have peace and kindly feeling; for itoften provoked clashes that should have beenavoided. At Jackson, my boyhood home, the negro sol-diers of the garrison committed many depreda-tions ; stole fruit, hogs, poultry, anything theytook a fancy to or needed, and it was winked atby the officers, white men tho they were. Thevwere very insolent also, to the conquered rebels,as they contemptuously stigmatized the use to appeal to the commandant, there wasno redress. So citizens now and then got intovery serious trouble by taking matters in theirown hands. You all may remember that ColonelEd Yerger of Jackson, was so outraged becausethe commandant at that post in his absence sentand seized Mrs. Yergers piano, because the 276 (^/. DRAGGING HIM THROUGH THE STREETS. RECOLLECTIONS OF A REBEL SURGEON. colonel had not paid his share of the tax leviedby the commandant for street improvement orsomething, that on meeting him on the streetYerger stabbed him to death. It was ColonelCrane I think his name was. But, well, Im off; Colonel Fleet Cooper, theeditor of the Jackson paper at that time—^no, hewasnt a shonuff colonel, you know. In theSouth all editors are Colonels, you know—sawsome negro soldiers in his orchard and shot atthem, but without injury. I think it was birdshot, and it was only done to scare them. He was roughly seized and hurried into town,(he lived in the suburbs), and taken to the lock-up. He was roughly handled; unnecessarily so,for he made no resistance—and was even beatenover the head. They were in such a hurry to gethim locked up that they wouldnt even give himtime to get his hat. I can see the crowd now
