The Basilica of Agios Dimitrios in Afitos on the Kassandra peninsula, Greece.

The Basilica of Agios Dimitrios in Afitos on the Kassandra peninsula, Greece. Built in the 19th Century of locally-quarried stone this church is the largest Eastern Orthodox Christian church on the peninsula with a dome. Set in the town square of Afitos in the N. East of the peninsula, Afitos is the oldest (and probably cutest) village in Halkidiki. The village has a handful of hotels and pensions and a reasonable scattering of restaurants and bars, most selling local food. The square is the hub of the village as is alive in early morning (before tourists rise) and in early evening. The square is "pedestrianised" but Greeks assume that means they can show of their driving skills to a larger audience, so expect cars, scooters and bikes aplenty! The church is open all day and the locals regularly attend services, so if you want photos of widows in traditional black weeds this is where you'll get them. Brian
