Irregular galaxy NGC 7673, optical Hubble Space Telescope image. Intense star birth regions (blue) make this a starburst galaxy. Two other galaxies are seen (centre right and upper right) in the background. Two theories may explain the large amount of star birth activity. NGC 7673 may have collided with another galaxy, prompting implosions of gas clouds to form stars. The other theory says that this could be an example of the vigorous star formation that occurred in the early history of the universe. NGC 7673 lies around 150 million light years away in the constellation Pegasus. Photographed in 1997.
