IN a more extended record of my grandfather, JohnJohnston, than appears in the preceding chapter Ihad included a number of matters relating to the earlyhistory of Pittsburgh which I here transfer to this volumeas they may be of interest to the general reader. SOME EARLY STATISTICS.—ARTHUR LEES DESCRIPTION. The whole number of houses in Pittsburgh, at the timeof the arrival of my grandfather, did not, perhaps, exceedseventy. In the year previous (1786), according to astatement in Niless Register, (vol. xxx, p. 436), there werebut forty-three, as follows: 86 of log, 1 of stone, 1frame, and 5 small stores. No one writes of the early history of Pittsburgh with- Statements as to the number of houses and population of Pitts-burgh in its early days vary so greatly that it is impossible either 22 Br. Franklin vs. Arttur Lee. out quoting the remarks of Arthur Lee in 1784: Pitts-burgh is inhabited almost entirely by Scots
