1870: Raging storms assault the Eddystone Lighthouse, 9 statute miles (14 km) south of Rame Head, Devon, England. This is Smeaton's Lighthouse, dating from 1759, the third lighthouse on the dangerous Eddystone Rocks. It remained in use until 1877 when erosion to the rocks under the lighthouse caused it to shake from side to side whenever large waves hit it.
