Itwas a rainy night and at about 10oclock 1 was ordered to report to theCaptain ; he said Sergeant, I am going back to camp. Ill be if I iSd,;. will stay out here in the rain, and if a commissioned officer is needed dur-ing the night, I order you to represent me. About midnightthere was an alarm on the line. I went to investigate and founda Brigadier-General in command of a brigade, who wished topass through lines. He told me that he was just in from BullRun and had orders to report to Chain Bridge. I asked for thecountersign. He said he hadnt any. I asked him what regimentswere in his brigade, and he told me what they were ( I think theywere niostly New England regiments). I
