On September 15, 1892, while actingat Dalys Theatre, he wedded the actress knownon the stage as Beatrice Cameron,—^in private lifeMiss Susan Hegeman. The marriage occurred atthe Church of the Redeemer, Eighty-second Street,in New York. With that companion,—an affec-tionate, devoted wife, appreciative of his virtues,sympathetic with his ambition, careful of his health,tolerant of his idiosyncrasy, helpful in his labor,and provident in his interest, he passed the remainder. Without his wifescounsel, comfort, and guidance, indeed, Mansfield,probably, would have become even a more bittercynic than the Alceste whom he represented so well,and, almost certainly, he would have worn himself outmuch sooner than he did, by injudicious venturesand by hopeless warfare with the world. They hadone child, a son, born August 3, 1898, named GeorgeGibbs,—the name of George having been given tohim in compliment to the daughter of one of theirintimate friends.
