This 1888 illustration shows a large group of people in Syracuse, New York, some 36 years earlier, in 1852, rescuing a runaway slave from the captors trying to catch him. Those pursuing the slave were doing so under the ruling of the 1850 Fugitive Slave Law, which said that fugitive slaves had, by law, to be returned to their owners - that is, back to captivity. Abolitionists refused to abide by the law - as seen here in New York state.
