Governor Stuyvesant made a voyage to Holland, and on his return, retired tohis estate in the Bowery, in the citv of New York, where he spent the remain-der of his life. At his death, in August 1682, he was interred in a chapelerected upon his own land. He left behind him an untarnished reputation, andhis descendants now enjoy the same honorable name and vast possessions, be-queathed by this illustrious ancestor. The engraving opposite, shows New York in the time of Stuyvesant. Thepicket fence which formed its northern limit, and which may be seen at thoright hand, was located at the part of the city now known as Wall street.
