This image may not be used to state or imply endorsement by CERN of any product, activity or service Large Hadron Collider (LHC), at CERN (the European particle physics laboratory) near Geneva, on the Swiss-French border, illustration. The LHC, the world's largest and most powerful particle collider, forms a large underground ring 27 kilometres in circumference and 100 metres deep. It began operating in 2008. The collision energy creates new particles that will decay into other particles. These are detected by equipment installed around the ring. The LHC energies have allowed study of exotic material like quark-gluon plasma, a form of quark matter. This overall view shows the ALICE (A Large Ion Collider Experiment), ATLAS (A Toroidal LHC Apparatus), CMS (Compact Muon Solenoid) and LHCb (Large Hadron Collider beauty) experiments. It also shows the smaller Proton Synchrotron Booster (PSB), Proton Synchrotron (PS) and Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) accelerators.
