Arnold Whittaker Wolfendale (born 1927), British astronomer, with a replica of Newton's reflecting telescope. Wolfendale's research career started in cosmic ray physics, and then broadened into general astrophysics. He worked at the universities of Manchester and then Durham. Elected Fellow of the Royal Society (1977), he served as President of the Royal Astronomical Society (1981-1983) and as Astronomer Royal (1990-1995). Knighted in 1995, he was appointed Professor of Experimental Physics at the Royal Institution in 1996. He has given many public lectures on astronomy and astrophysics.
