The Smith District provided for the erection of a schoolhouse in1876, on the site of the former one. D. B. Hoadley was the was ready for occupancy early in 1877. Mrs. Justine C. Coe wasthe first teacher in the new schoolhouse. It is very pleasantlylocated on a hillside which slopes to West River. There areabundant shade trees near the THE GATE SCHOOLHOUSE. The Straits Turnpike was built a century ago, and a tollgate wasmaintained near the Major Lounsbury house, now the residence ofCleveland Doolittle. The locality was designated as the tollgate disappeared long ago, but the name clung to the ham-let, and finally, about 1880, it was applied to the school schoolhouse in this district having fallen into a condition unfitfor school purposes, the school board threatened to withhold the 112 BETHANY. appropriation for its maintenance, and after considerable delibera-tion it was decided to build a new schoolhouse. Wales H. French,Allen Lounsbury and Arthur Lacey were elected a building com-mittee. A knoll a short distance south of the old schoolhouse, calledThe Sandhill, was chosen for the site of the new building, and itwas completed in 1880.
