On the right, insulin binds with its receptor in a normal manner. This brings the glucose transporter (Glut-4) to the plasma membrane, allowing glucose to enter the cell. On the left, insulin fails to bind and the Glut-4 is not activated and glucose is prevented from entering the cell. The glucose molecules return to the blood stream, thus elevating the blood-sugar level.
