This layer rests upon the base-ment membrane, outside of which there is a scanty amount of connectivetissue. The nuclei of the cells are large and spherical and occupy aposition central in the cell. A well-marked nucleolus is present, butthe chromatin is less abundant than in the nuclei of the gland cytoplasm is abundant and stains readily with acid dyes.
