Homebase DIY store behind Peter Pan Pond in Catford, South London
The first Homebase DIY supermarket was opened by Sainsbury's in Croydon in 1981. The company has since passed through a number of ownerships and is now owned, together with Argos, by the Home Retail Group. There are now 350 stores in Ireland and the UK. The Catford store imitates the design of the Crystal Palace and was built in 1983. The store is located behind a small pond known variously as Southend pond or Peter Pan Pond containing the island on which the Irish rebel Jack Cade is reputed to have hid in the 15th century.
