Germany Berlin cyclists on the slip road heading for the city s Avus motorway during the annual bicycle demonstration
The Berlin Bicycle Demonstration - Fahrrad Sternfahrt - goes under the motto Respect for Cyclists and aims to promote cycling as an ecologically friendly means of transportation. From humble beginnings in 1977, the event has grown continually in terms of number of participants and route length. Estimated to be the largest of its kind in the world, it attracted a record 250,000 cyclists in 2004. With the addition of two new long distance routes for racing cyclists in 2006, the entire route length is closing in on 1000 km. Starting from a series of points around Berlin, the convoys wind their way along the city s wide boulevards at a leisurely 13 kilometres per hour. At inner city checkpoints, more participants join the crowd revelling in the rare privilege of having the right of way over motorized traffic. The highlight is a 10-kilometre stretch of motorway that is temporarily closed to traffic and, for one day in the year, filled with thousands of cyclists.
