Illustration of the hilum of the liver (grey). A hilum is a fissure where blood vessels, nerves and other structures enter an organ. The large vessel (light blue) across centre is the portal vein, which drains deoxygenated blood from the liver. The bile duct (purple, upper centre) carries bile from the liver, where it is produced, to the gallbladder (purple, top left), where it is stored, and the small intestine where it aids digestion of fats.
