Named after the great renaissance Dutch philosopher and humanist, Rotterdam's beautiful new suspension bridge adds considerably to the city's skyline of exciting new architecture. Seen here from an elevated viewpoint on a nearby moored cruise liner, it crosses the Nieuwe Maas in the centre of Rotterdam, connecting the busy north and south sides of the city. It was opened in 1996. Here, looking up, we see its main support structure and some traffic and street lights, with other street furniture.
