This $45,930,245, estimate does not include the cost of main-taining a navigable channel in 12,500 miles of river, including the por- 1/7 tion of the Mississippi between Cairo and the mouth of Red Riverand the Hudson between Troy and New York. In the portion of theMississippi River last mentioned, we find (see pages 269 and 270 ofthis discussion) that the annual cost of maintaining a fourteen-footchannel for 762 miles would be $9,160,, or a capitalized valueof a little over $300,553 per mile; but we do not know what portion.
