Acute lymphocytic leukaemia. Light micrograph of a blood smear from a patient with acute lymphocytic leukaemia. This is a cancer of the white blood cells (leucocytes), specifically the lymphocytes, which are responsible for fighting infection. The disease leads to their abnormal proliferation in the bone marrow and by organs of the lymph system, which can result in swollen lymph nodes, fatigue, anaemia and persistent infections. Acute leukaemias progress quickly. Magnification: x170 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
