Most of these particularsare exemplified in the figures right-hand one is from an en-graved gem, representing the VestalTuccia carrying water in a sievefrom the Tiber to the temple, as atest of her chastity (Val. Max. viii. ), and exhibits the stola, the car-basus or linen* vest reaching to theknee, and the suffibulum carried inthe left hand, and partially dependingfrom the right shoulder. The left-hand figure, from a terra-cotta lamp,shows the Vestal as she appeared atthe sacrifice, with the suffibulum puton. The brooch at the throat isomitted, but its position and use willbe readily conceived, while the formof the drapery and border round itare distinctly apparent. VESTIARIUM.
