In 1857 he was elected to the office of Tax Col-lector of Butte County by an almost unanimousvote. In 1860 ho closed his official career in Cali-fornia, and engaged in merchandising, whi(^h busi-ness he prosecuted at different j)oints in ButteCounty until the spring of 1863, when he emigrated.
