Beauty by the Shore, Edo period (1615–1868), 18th century, Japan, Hanging scroll; ink and color on paper, Image: 32 x 11 15/16 in. ( x cm), Paintings, Kubo Shunman (Japanese, 1757–1820), Shunman, who was known primarily as a literary figure, studied painting under Kitao Shigemasa (1739–1820). He was also inspired by Torii Kiyonaga (1725–1815), a famed painter of beauties, or bijin. In addition to his nikuhitsu ukiyo-e, or painted images of the 'floating world,' Shunman is well known for his finely designed and produced surimono prints
