Revenue Cutters capturing an American smuggling vessel 1765

Illustration by Paul Hardy (1862-1942) from a history of England published in 1906. A British Revenue Cutter capturing an American smuggling vessel. Many merchants sought to avoid the taxes imposed on the colonies by the British government around the years 1764/1765, including the hated sugar act of 1764, and the Stamp and Townshend acts of 1765. The rallying cry of no taxation without representation became one of the major causes of the American Revolution.
