Salford Cranes Greater Manchester, UK 24 October 2013 The two blue cranes in Ontario Basin, Salford Quays near Manchester stand proud for the last time, as they await demolition this weekend, to be replaced by a phone app costing £150,000. The cranes date back to the 1960s and are a reminder of Salford's industrial heritage. Salford Quays now is home to Media City UK, the Lowry Theatre and the Imperial War Museum North. Salford Council has decided that the cranes are too expensive to refurbish and repair, despite much local opposition. Credit: John Fryer/Alamy Live News
