Heath fritillary (Mellicta athalia) perched on ragged robin (Lychnis flos-cuculi)

Although widely distributed in Europe, the heath fritillary has a very limited range in the UK. Although there are colonies in Devon and in Essex, the stronghold is in the East Blean Woods in Kent, where extensive areas are managed especially for the species.
