Its distinctive architecture has survived, however, not without some ups and downs. Following its hippie culture of the 1960s, the area went into decline but was renovated in the late 1970s. In the 1980s it became a center for the San Francisco comedy scene where the careers of such notables as Robin Williams, Whoopi Goldberg and Dana Carvey began.
